60s Bond movie poster
December 2023.
The poster advertised the Italian Iteration of the 1964 James bond movie “Agent 007 The man with the golden Pistol”.
The client wished to reduce fold lines and the damage this had caused to the image ahead of framing. The large offset lithograph showed some signs of fading and losses in the media layer, particularly where the poster had been folded for a period of time. Discolouration was also predominant around certain fold lines, presumably due to how it was previously housed. The poster was tension lined with Japanese tissue and Jin Shofu to support areas weakened by repeated folding and reduce existing fold lines prior to framing. Losses in the media layer were in-painted using watercolour.

Charcoal sketch on paper
May 2023
A portrait made by the client’s distant relative. Aim as per client wishes was to reduce the foxing and discolouration across the image, prior to reframing. After releasing the portrait from the acidic secondary support, a series of washes were applied alternating between reducing agents to lessen the visibility of the foxing and discolouration. Treatment was finished with an alkaline wash to prevent the risk of foxing regression and flush out the reducing agents from the primary support.

Advice for future care:
- Advised client on ideal display placement parameters to avoid/reduce exposure to direct sunlight and temperature and humidity fluctuation which could cause foxing regression and discolouration.
- For framing, the client was encouraged to request the use of glazing with UV filter to prevent photo-oxidation of the support.
Black gouache landscape, attributed to Karl Kunz (1905-71)
April 2022
To prepare the painting for framing the client wanted to reduce the yellow discolouration of the support. Previously a window mount covered the edges of the image, creating a noticeable difference where the support had previously been exposed to light. Some of the mount remained attached.
After removing the mount using an aqueous gel, I applied a series of alkaline float washes to reduce overall discolouration and acidity of the paper support. The float washing reduced the risk of fading and leaching of the media. The success of treatment allowed for the whole image to be viewed while framed as the client wished.

Offset lithograph reproduction of a Dufy painting.
October 2021
This offset lithograph after Raoul Dufy’s Mer au Havre, was treated to reduce staining and overall discolouration present. As the backboard was to remain in place to maintain provenance of the print, I first cleaned it employing dry and mechanical methods before employing a gel wash to draw out discolouration from the support. I later in-painted some of the losses in the surface to reduce their overall visibility. Whilst the backing was preserved, the issues presented were addressed as per client wishes prior to reframing and display in their home.
Display and housing advice was provided to the client for the continued preservation of the print.
