Camilla Camus-Doughan Art on Paper Conservator

Camilla Camus-Doughan

paper conservator

For the past 10 years, I have been devoted to perfecting my knowledge of paper conservation, with the aim of contributing to the preservation of heritage on paper, be it for organisations or individuals. I have been fortunate to work on large scale archival projects, where I have honed my skills in adapting conservation methods to cater to the unique needs and restrictions of each collection item, while never losing sight of the constraints of time and budget. My work with private collectors has taught me how to manage expectations at the same time ensuring their artworks and collections remain intact.

My freelance work, past experience and training in the conservation of art on paper have equipped me with a wealth of knowledge and skills such as discolouration and stain reduction, structural repairs, lining, and in-painting, all executed in accordance with the ICON code of Ethics.

During my tenure as a Project Conservator for Digitisation and large scale projects at The National Archives (TNA), I carried out benchwork, conducted surveys, and administered projects for our commercial partners and internally generated projects. My most significant responsibility was ensuring selected objects were legible, and in a stable condition for digitisation. I adapted my approach to meet the needs of each record or collection item and kept meticulous records of my surveys, time estimates, and conservation treatments performed, updating databases accordingly. Despite juggling multiple projects, I managed my time effectively, achieving competing targets across projects.

My work on the Prize Papers Project at TNA was particularly rewarding, as I managed the project’s workflow while disseminating knowledge about the collection and performing single object conservation treatments on rare and valuable pieces, expanding my understanding of object conservation too.

My experience has strengthened my conviction that the preservation of heritage on paper is an essential task, one that I am pleased to be a part of.

Testimonials

Sean Johnson

The battersea framer

“I had a set of Graham Clarke prints I had had for years. I thought I would put them up for auction but they had some staining and were yellowed and discoloured. I’ve sent many of my clients over to Camilla before I frame their pieces, always with great results, so I gave her a call. Thanks to her great work I can put the series up for auction

Helen Evenden

Private Client

Helen had a set of posters which were terribly creased and brittle in areas from past storage and had some losses in places as a result. After lining and retouching them I returned them to her framer. This was her response-
“I saw the posters today and they look a million times better. Very grateful for the careful work to preserve them.”
